  • A nationally renowned collaborative project demonstrates the real impact of Low Code Open Source on the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises.

San Sebastián, June __, 2025 – Following exhaustive research and pilot testing in various companies, the OpenLowCodeLabs project has demonstrated the effectiveness of open source Low Code and No Code tools in accelerating the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), substantially improving their competitiveness.

This industrial research project, led by the GAIA Association in collaboration with AEI Galicia Digital, Cluster TIC Asturias, and the companies Igarle, Devol, Irontec, Iametza, Imatia, and Q2Tec, has yielded highly positive results, validating various platforms in real-world applications in key areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, API integration, and payment and collection management, positioning Low Code Open Source tools as strategic levers to accelerate the digitization of Spanish SMEs.

“OpenLowCodeLabs proves that Low Code Open Source is not just a technological trend, but a real and viable tool for SMEs to digitize in a sustainable, efficient, and independent way,” says Cristina Murillo, Director of Cluster Services at GAIA.

The findings reveal that these technologies enable companies to gain agility, reduce costs, and democratize software development without compromising technological autonomy or relying on large vendors.

Key project results

  • Faster development speed. Low Code tools accelerate application creation in areas such as customer management, API interfaces, and IoT visualization.
  • Cost reduction. Proprietary licenses are eliminated and development times are reduced by up to 50% in certain use cases.
  • Autonomy for functional profiles. Open source platforms make it easier for non-technical professionals to actively participate in the design of business solutions.
  • Validation of solutions in a real environment. The project has enabled five tools to be tested in development companies, comparing their performance with traditional technologies.

OpenLowCodeLabs concludes with the creation of a simple and concise guide specifically aimed at non-technical users, which seeks to provide clear recommendations on how to strategically leverage Low Code and No Code Open Source tools in order to maximize their benefits and minimize technological barriers.

Lessons learned

  • The potential of Low Code Open Source is real, but its effectiveness depends on the use case and the profile of the implementation team.
  • There are platforms that enable progress in the development of business ICT tools without advanced programming knowledge.
  • Strategic planning and practical validation are essential to ensure return on investment.

Future projection

The results of OpenLowCodeLabs will be presented at an online event showcasing the results of digitization projects in key sectors, which will take place on June 26 and is organized by GAIA, the Association of Knowledge and Technology Industries, which brings together more than 300 companies in this sector. The event will also feature the SMARTH2OTEL 3.0 and ASTILLAS II projects, which seek to promote digitization and sustainability through research and development of solutions in the tourism and timber sectors, respectively.

OpenLowCodeLabs has been funded through the Support for Innovative Business Groups (AEI) program of the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism.
