Today we are speaking with Carlos Battyán, who comes from the field of health (biochemistry), which has given him a unique perspective on healthcare issues.

What are your thoughts on the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare?

As we connect with other players who now provide such important tools for making better diagnoses and predictions, we begin to truly appreciate the scope of everything we see today about the star of the moment, which is artificial intelligence. And that is what allows us to share experiences, possibilities, successes, and mistakes from different companies, how they care for their patients and their healthcare professionals so that everything thrives in the most harmonious, lasting, and sustainable balance possible.

Is there health without digital technology, or will there be no health without digital technology?

What we now refer to as digital aspects in general have truly brought simplicity in some cases, hand in hand with technology that is not simple, but complex, allowing us to approach not only the field of healthcare, but practically every aspect of life from a different perspective.

When are we going to remove the word “digital” from the term “digital health”? For the time being, I believe we will continue to use it because we are taking steps that are neither complete nor final, which means we still need to emphasize that we are making progress in areas that were perhaps more uncertain before and are now less uncertain, but are not entirely clear.

And that gave us everything related to digital technology. That digital transformation we often refer to, such as truly getting people involved and making technology just another tool, something they hardly notice because it’s already been implemented so well.

As a result, healthcare will undoubtedly tend to incorporate this digital aspect with increasing force and will become a single, very powerful healthcare system based on digital tools.

You are promoting a digital health working group from the Cantabria Tera ICT cluster. What is its purpose?

At the time, the cluster set out to be a relevant player in the community, not only from the point of view of technology and information technology. Advances in technology in different areas highlighted that it was occupying a place of recognition and value that perhaps had not been given such prominence before.

And one of the areas where society as a whole is beginning to notice that technology has an important use, an important potential to bring about a turning point, is precisely the field of healthcare. So, they quickly understood that creating a new internal body to bring together companies in the sector that do not have healthcare professionals, but rather technologists, engineers, designers, and developers, would also make it more genuine for them to approach the field of healthcare.

And that’s when this idea began to take shape, and today it’s working very well. We still have a long way to go, but at least those of us who intend to advance not only in technology but also in the field of healthcare are getting organized.
